The Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaete Fabian-Obot, has charged journalists in the state to always respect and protect individuals’ right to human dignity in the discharge of their professional duties.

Justice Fabian-Obot gave the charge in Uyo on Tuesday while receiving the State Working Committee of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, led by its Chairman, Nsibiet John, on a courtesy visit to her chambers.

In a statement obtained from the media unit of the Chief Judge, she stressed that the dignity of the human person must never be compromised or traded for any reason, regardless of the circumstances.

She emphasised that journalists, as the image and conscience of society, must uphold the highest standards of professionalism by verifying facts, hearing all sides of a story and exercising patience when challenges arise in reaching concerned parties.

According to her, defamatory reports have the potential to erode confidence, damage reputations and undermine public trust.

“I am delighted to receive this delegation today. I encourage you to remain true to the teachings and etiquettes of your profession, because professionalism is the hallmark of an excellent practitioner. Journalists should always respect and protect the right to human dignity in the discharge of their professional duties at all times,” she said.

Earlier in his address, the NUJ State Chairman, extolled the Chief Judge’s motherly virtues since assuming office, describing her tenure as impactful and reform-driven.

He commended her contributions to the judiciary, particularly in the areas of infrastructural development, speedy dispensation of justice, improved decency within the judicial system and enhanced welfare for workers in the third arm of government.

John further called for improved synergy and partnership between the judiciary and the media through regular engagements, noting that such collaboration would foster a more progressive society.

He also appealed to the Chief Judge to consider capacity-building initiatives for journalists who specialise in judiciary and crime reporting.

Members of the NUJ State Working Committee who accompanied the chairman on the visit included Idorenyin Aquaisua, Edifon Solomon and Ubong Inyang. Also present was the Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, Ekomobong Peter.
