Apprehension is building in Jos, Plateau State, as the governorship election petition tribunal is poised to deliver judgment on the disputed gubernatorial polls. The tribunal notified litigants of the impending verdict date.

Tension has risen after the tribunal nullified four National Assembly seats won by the PDP in recent weeks. The APC governorship candidate, Nentawe Yilwatda Goshwe, had petitioned against PDP’s Caleb Mutfwang, declared winner of the March 18th election.

Both parties have been exchanging accusations amidst the rulings. However, Muslim youths under the Ja’amatu Nasril Islam (JNI) have called for restraint to avoid crisis. JNI youth chairman Mustapha Bala and secretary Abubakar Zaki appealed for calm as the judgement nears.

Meanwhile, the state police commissioner Okoro Alaware warned against jeopardizing peace or acting unlawfully. Alaware recently engaged stakeholders including political youths, transport unions and religious leaders who promised to avoid violence post-judgment.

The CP encouraged propagating peace on media platforms and not allowing political manipulation. He advised residents to be security conscious and report suspicious activities to aid fighting crime.

With tensions surrounding the impending tribunal decision, all eyes are on Jos to see if peace will prevail regardless of the outcome.
