Former NBA Vice President, John Aikpokpo-Martins, has congratulated renowned human rights lawyers Femi Falana, SAN, and Senior Counsel Ayo Obe on their conferment with the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a statement shared Friday titled “Let’s Do It…”, Aikpokpo-Martins described the honour bestowed on the duo on June 12—Democracy Day—as “very prestigious and distinguished,” commending President Tinubu for recognizing their pivotal roles in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
“My heartfelt congratulations to Femi Falana SAN and Ayo Obe on being honoured with the CON award by President Tinubu for your outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement in the 1990s, and the defence of human rights and rule of law over the decades,” he stated.
He emphasized that the award was a “testament to their tireless efforts and unwavering commitment” to the ideals of democracy and justice in Nigeria, noting that both lawyers had inspired generations through decades of activism.
Applauding the President’s decision, Aikpokpo-Martins added, “President Tinubu certainly got this right. Nigeria’s reward system must change to reflect recognition for those who truly contribute to national progress.”
He concluded by celebrating the honourees’ legacy, expressing hope that their work would continue to inspire future generations and strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
