The Jigawa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the suspension of its leader and former governor, Sule Lamido, by a faction of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), describing the action as illegal and inconsequential.

Speaking with newsmen in Dutse, the state capital, the PDP Publicity Secretary, Mr. Umar Jitau Madamuwa, said the purported suspension was “laughable and the joke of the century,” insisting that it lacked moral, legal, and constitutional basis.

Madamuwa stressed that “In any case the PDP constitution has no provision for the suspension of a Life Member”.

The publicity secretary said Lamido remains one of the party’s few surviving founding fathers who dedicated his life, resources, and political capital to building and sustaining the PDP from its formation in 1998 to date.

He recalled Lamido’s role in the struggle for the return to democratic rule, noting that he was among those who expanded the Group of Seven to the Group of 19, a movement that resisted military rule and eventually birthed the PDP and other political parties.

“Where was Wabara during these historic struggles that produced civilian government and enabled the PDP to win at the centre, control most states, and dominate the National Assembly and local governments nationwide?” Madamuwa asked.

Describing Lamido as a patriotic statesman and pillar of Nigerian democracy, Madamuwa said the former governor had devoted his life from youth to old age to the service of the people and the pursuit of freedom, justice, and better living conditions for the masses.

He warned that those behind the suspension should “exercise caution,” stressing that Lamido is “far ahead in political stature and relevance” than those seeking to intimidate him for personal or factional interests.

Madamuwa said the Jigawa PDP would respond strictly in line with the Nigerian Constitution and the PDP constitution, adding that democratic processes and due process must be followed in resolving internal party disputes.

He questioned the authority of Senator Adolphus Wabara to speak for the party, describing him as a political opportunist whose relevance has fluctuated with factional alignments within the PDP.

According to him, it was ironic that Wabara, who had himself been expelled by another faction of the PDP at different times, would now claim the moral authority to suspend a founding father of the party.

“The PDP is not a roadside association that can be hijacked by self-appointed groups issuing press statements as instruments of intimidation,” Madamuwa said, adding that any action taken outside the party’s recognised constitutional organs is null and void.

He concluded that Lamido’s legacy, sacrifices, and unwavering commitment to the PDP cannot be erased by what he described as “political theatrics,” urging all parties to await the outcome of the Appeal Court judgment that will determine the party’s legitimate leadership.
