Rivers State governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has disclosed that President Bola Tinubu offered him advice during their closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Monday evening.
The meeting came shortly after Fubara formally resumed his duties as governor following the lifting of the six-month emergency rule in the state.
Tinubu had on September 17 announced the end of the emergency rule imposed on Rivers since March 18, directing Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and members of the state House of Assembly to return to office. During the period of emergency, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd) served as sole administrator of the state.
Fubara, who returned to Port Harcourt on September 19 to a jubilant welcome from supporters, explained to State House correspondents that his visit to Aso Rock was a mark of courtesy and appreciation.
“You are aware that suspension was lifted at midnight on the 17th, and I came in on the 19th. Ideally, it’s proper for me to see Mr President and to tell him that I am back, and I have also resumed my responsibility as the governor of Rivers State,” he said.
“It was a father-son discussion; I was telling him thank you and the areas where there should be any issue for him to guide me properly so we don’t be in any crisis. That’s all.”
Pressed further on Tinubu’s response, Fubara revealed that the President “advised” him on how to steer affairs of the state.
Reiterating that peace has returned to Rivers, Fubara declared: “As far as I’m concerned, we have made peace. Fubara and his principal are working together.”
Earlier in a statewide broadcast on resumption of duties, the governor had explained that he resisted calls to challenge the constitutionality of the emergency rule and suspension of democratic structures in the state.
Fubara, clad in a white caftan and black cap, arrived at the State House around 6:20 p.m. His meeting with Tinubu followed the President’s separate engagements with key political and economic leaders, including AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and governor of Kwara State; Senator Hope Uzodimma, Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and governor of Imo State; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas; Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zacch Adedeji; and Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun.
As of press time, the detailed agenda of the President’s meeting with Fubara had not been made public.
