The National Judicial Council (NJC) has been urged to investigate and, where necessary, sanction judges accused of being influenced by politicians to target opposition leaders in Nigeria.

The Centre for Reform and Public Advocacy made the call on Monday in Abuja, citing what it described as the selective prosecution and intimidation of opposition politicians by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Kalu Agu, Head of the Centre’s Legal Unit, warned that democracy in Nigeria is at risk and called for urgent action.

He described selective enforcement of justice as a threat to the nation’s foundations.

Agu also accused anti-corruption agencies of shielding some former governors and ministers from the ruling party who face corruption allegations, while opposition figures continue to face prosecution.

He questioned why governors aligned with the APC appear immune to investigation by the EFCC, adding that they are treated as above the law.

The Centre further criticised the judiciary, alleging that some judges have been used as instruments by politicians.

Despite requests from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), certain Federal High Court judges continue to preside over cases in ways that allegedly favour political interests.

Agu noted that while the Nigerian judiciary has a tradition of upholding justice and protecting citizens’ rights, the actions of some judicial officers who have allowed themselves to be used to intimidate opposition leaders highlight the need for vigilance.

He called on Nigerians and the international community to condemn any attempts to manipulate the judicial system for political gain and urged the NJC to investigate and sanction judges who compromise their oaths, protect judicial independence, and support those who resist political pressure.

Agu also emphasised that security agencies should act as neutral guardians of the public rather than instruments of the ruling party.
