Senator Obinna Ogba has dismissed claims that the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, influenced his decision to suspend the General Manager of Legacy FM, Mr Godfrey Chikwere.

Chikwere was suspended by the station on August 9 after allegedly criticising the governor during a talk show. The move sparked mixed reactions, with some faulting him for allegedly calling the governor a weak leader, while others insisted his comments were within bounds.

Speaking on Monday in Abakaliki, Ogba, who represented Ebonyi North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, said the suspension was purely an internal matter and not politically influenced.

“I feel so bad to hear that the governor directed the suspension, as such is an insult to my personality. This is because I inaugurated the station before Nwifuru came into office,” he said.

The Chief Executive Officer of the station explained that Chikwere had repeatedly failed to adhere to the organisation’s code of conduct despite several warnings.

“I warned him severally on the non-adherence and cannot bear it further. Chikwere, therefore, has to go and rest,” Ogba stated.

Chikwere, popularly known as Baby Mouth in Ebonyi’s social circles, denied attacking the governor, insisting he acted as a professional media personality.

“I never had a hidden agenda or personal interest, but just communicated my opinion. I have the governor’s interest at heart, and I think such was misunderstood,” he said.

He maintained that his posts and comments could be verified to confirm the absence of any personal bias.

However, the Manager of Programmes and Administration at Legacy FM, Mr Chukwuma Onwe, criticised the decision, insisting Chikwere did nothing wrong.

“Chikwere’s discussion with his guest analyst was constructive and addressed the alleged sale of official vehicles by the governor’s appointees,” Onwe stated.
