A former Chief of Army Staff (CAS), Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), has said insecurity in Nigeria is essentially a political problem that cannot be resolved by the military alone.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday, Buratai stressed that tackling insecurity requires a holistic approach involving political, economic, and social interventions alongside military operations.
“The military is just one aspect of the overall national activity. We must get it very clear that apart from the military, we have the economic, social, and political lines,” he explained. “From all indications, there is no government past or present that does not want insecurity addressed, and resources have been earmarked and released for such. But the social aspects and underlying causes must be addressed. It’s not just about relying 100 per cent on the military.”
He attributed the roots of insecurity to political factors, noting that political actors played a role in its emergence but have since left the burden of managing the crisis to the military.
“This insecurity is essentially political. It started through some political actors. Now it’s been left to the military, while political actors are staying behind. There’s a need for a total review of security, especially political involvement and associations,” Buratai said.
The former Army Chief dismissed claims that the military was stalling progress in the fight against insecurity, insisting they remain “a solution, not the problem.” He urged Nigerians to give full support to soldiers on the frontlines, warning against actions that could weaken their morale.
“We cannot continuously see the military as a problem to solving insecurity. They are the solution, one aspect of it. And they will play their role very well if they have good support,” he stated.
“Any soldier in the field holding a weapon and standing between Nigerians and the adversary is very important. You cannot demoralise him, despise him, or make things difficult for him. That endangers his life, his family, and the lives of all Nigerians. That is why we need to give them complete support to succeed.”
