The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has begun uploading results of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council chairmanship elections on its Result Viewing (IReV) portal.

During the polls held on Saturday, 68 elective positions were contested, including six chairmanship seats and 62 councillorship positions across the six area councils.

On the portal, as monitored by our correspondent at 7:35 pm, the following results had been uploaded:

  • Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC): 847 results uploaded from 1,401 polling units
  • Bwari: 255 results uploaded from 485 polling units
  • Gwagwalada: 204 results uploaded from 338 polling units
  • Kuje: 115 results uploaded from 262 polling units
  • Kwali: 75 results uploaded from 201 polling units
  • Abaji: 42 results uploaded from 135 polling units

The voting process started at 8:30 a.m. and ended at 2:30 p.m. in many units as scheduled.

Voting has now ended in many polling units while it continued in a few others to give those on the queue before the 2:30 p.m. deadline the opportunity to cast their ballots.

Many polling units recorded low voter turnout during the exercise.

Residents of the FCT cast their ballots on Saturday to elect the leadership of its six area councils: Abaji, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kwali, Kuje and the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

About 637 candidates from 17 political parties are vying for the 68 positions — 62 councillors and six area council chairpersons.

Five of the area councils have 10 wards each, while AMAC has 12.

There are 1,680,315 registered voters in the territory, but 1,587,025 who collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) are expected to vote across 2,822 polling units in the six area councils.

The exercise was supported by 4,345 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines.
