The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has strongly condemned the brutal assault on Ms. Jennifer Elobor, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member serving in Anambra State.

The attack, which left her beaten and her clothing torn off, has been described as degrading, inhumane, and a violation of her dignity and fundamental human rights guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In a statement signed by NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, and General Secretary Dr. Mobolaji Ojibara, the association emphasized that no individual, whether suspected of an offense or completely innocent, deserves to be subjected to such barbaric treatment.

“While security agencies have the mandate to apprehend criminals and maintain law and order, such powers must never be exercised in a manner that tramples upon the rights of innocent citizens,” the NBA said. “Even when making arrests, the law provides clear procedures to protect individual dignity. The conduct displayed against Ms. Elobor is a complete negation of these safeguards and an affront to human decency.”

The NBA commended the Anambra State Government for swiftly identifying and arresting the operatives involved, noting that such decisive action reflects commendable responsiveness to public outrage. However, the association stressed that accountability must not end at arrest.

“The perpetrators must be promptly and diligently prosecuted in accordance with the law. Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done, to serve as redress for Ms. Elobor and deterrence against similar abuses in the future,” the statement added.

Highlighting the need for reform, the NBA called for comprehensive training, reorientation, and continuous capacity-building for security operatives. “Respect for human rights, professionalism, and restraint must be embedded in their conduct at all times,” the statement said.

The NBA also directed its branches in Anambra State and the National Litigation Committee to closely monitor the case to ensure justice is served. The association reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rule of law, safeguarding human dignity, and ensuring justice for Ms. Elobor.
