The Council of Legal Education, CLE, has withdrawn the prize awarded to the best graduating student in Professional Ethics at the Nigerian Law School following the circulation of a photograph which the Council considered inconsistent with professional standards and decorum.

The decision was disclosed in a statement signed by the Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, Aderonke Osho.
According to the statement, the Council considered the circumstances surrounding the award and subsequently approved its withdrawal from the recipient because of the photograph circulating online.
“The Council considered the circumstances surrounding the award of the prize for the best graduating student in professional ethics and approved the withdrawal of the prize from the recipient, arising from the circulation of a photograph online depicting the recipient in attire considered inconsistent with the professional standards and decorum,” Osho said.
The Council did not identify the recipient in the statement and did not provide details of the particular photograph or precisely describe the attire that prompted the disciplinary decision.
However, published records from the 2026 Nigerian Law School Call to Bar ceremonies identified Ogechi C. Ifezie of the Lagos Campus as the first-prize winner in Professional Ethics.
She was also listed as the course leader in Professional Ethics for the 2026 graduating class.
The Council’s statement stopped short of expressly naming Ifezie as the person affected by the latest decision, meaning the identification remains based on the previously published award list rather than an express confirmation in the disciplinary announcement.
The affected prize formed part of the awards presented to outstanding graduates during the 2026 Call to Bar ceremonies held in Abuja in July.
The ceremonies recognised candidates who distinguished themselves in the five core professional courses of the Nigerian Law School, including Civil Litigation, Criminal Litigation, Corporate Law Practice, Property Law Practice and Professional Ethics.
Beyond withdrawing the Professional Ethics prize, the Council disclosed that it also sanctioned two students over separate cases of misconduct relating to indiscipline.
Their identities and the exact nature of the misconduct were not disclosed.
The CLE said the measures reflected its responsibility to maintain discipline, professional standards and appropriate conduct among students passing through the Nigerian Law School.
The development comes barely weeks after the Council issued a separate warning to candidates awaiting Call to Bar against improperly wearing legal wigs and gowns or portraying themselves publicly as qualified legal practitioners before their formal admission to the Nigerian Bar.
In that earlier directive, the Council expressed concern over photographs and videos posted on social media showing candidates wearing professional legal regalia in ways it regarded as inconsistent with the dignity of the profession.
It warned that candidates found engaging in conduct considered incompatible with professional standards could face disciplinary consequences affecting their eligibility and fitness for Call to Bar.
The latest withdrawal, however, goes beyond a general warning and represents the Council taking disciplinary action affecting an academic or professional recognition already awarded to a graduate.
The development could also generate debate within the legal profession over the extent to which a graduate’s conduct outside academic examinations should affect a prize earned on the basis of performance in Professional Ethics.
The CLE statement did not disclose whether the recipient was invited to make representations before the award was withdrawn, whether an internal disciplinary panel considered the matter, or whether there is a procedure for reviewing or appealing the decision.
It also did not indicate whether the Professional Ethics prize would now be awarded to the candidate who originally finished second in the subject or simply remain withdrawn.
For the 2026 graduating class, Israel Adeniyi A. of the Lagos Campus had been listed as the second-prize winner in Professional Ethics.
The Council maintained that upholding discipline and professional conduct remains central to the training of prospective and newly qualified lawyers in Nigeria.
The withdrawal consequently underscores the increasing attention being paid by Nigerian legal-education authorities to social-media conduct and the public presentation of members and prospective members of the legal profession.
