The Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC) has announced a specialised 20-unit course on “Master Mediating Communal Conflicts,” designed to equip mediators and other participants with practical skills for understanding, managing and resolving communal disputes in Nigeria.

The virtual training is scheduled to hold on August 26 and 27, 2026, via Zoom, with sessions running from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the scheduled days.
According to the organisers, communal conflicts remain among the most prevalent forms of disputes in Nigeria, particularly given the country’s multi-ethnic and multi-religious character.
ICMC noted that although diversity is an important feature of Nigerian society, ethnic, religious and communal disagreements have, in many instances, escalated to levels capable of threatening regional and national peace and security.
The consequences of such crises, according to the Institute, have included loss of lives, displacement of communities and destruction of property, making effective conflict management and mediation increasingly important.
The Institute said one of the greatest challenges confronting mediators dealing with communal disputes is achieving and maintaining a healthy balance between competing interests on different sides of a conflict.
The course will therefore examine the causes of communal conflicts and factors responsible for their escalation, while helping participants understand how to manage differences in the interests, positions, willingness and capabilities of disputing individuals, groups and communities.
Participants will also be trained on approaches mediators can adopt in developing multi-faceted solutions capable of helping conflicting parties reach mutually acceptable and sustainable settlements.
The programme is expected to focus on practical ways of balancing competing interests without worsening existing divisions, while strengthening the mediator’s ability to facilitate dialogue and long-term peacebuilding.
The course fee is ₦100,000 for members of the Institute, while non-members will pay ₦120,000.
