The General Secretary of the Yoruba Lawyers Association, popularly referred to as Egbe-Amofin, Tunji Osho, has refuted a false narration posted on several social media platforms, including WhatsApp, that the group met in Ibadan yesterday and adopted a particular Presidential candidate for Saturday’s Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) election of new national officers according Thecreed report.

Addressing the alleged false narrative, Mr. Osho clarified, “I am still the Secretary of Egbe Amofin to answer the question posed. I have read your clarification and the narration of events that happened today in Ibadan as captured by my brother and friend, Double High Chief Moshood. I note that both narrations are to the effect that Egbe Amofin as a body did not meet in Ibadan today or anywhere else.”

He further explained that the gathering in Ibadan, which took place after the general meeting of the Ibadan branch of the NBA, was a meeting of friends and supporters of a particular candidate. The attendees included members of the Ibadan branch and Egbe’s members and leaders who back the candidate on whose behalf they had assembled. “That was not Egbe Amofin’s gathering, and I am happy there is no dispute as to that,” Osho added.

The Secretary also revealed that some leaders of the Bar and Egbe from Ekiti and Ondo States had reached out to inquire about a potential meeting of Egbe Amofin in Ibadan, having been invited to a gathering there. Osho confirmed to them that no meeting of Egbe Amofin was scheduled for Ibadan or any other location on that day. He stated, “I am positive, and that can also be verified from the video, that leaders of the Bar and Egbe from Ekiti and Ondo States were not present in the gathering being reported.”

In a related development, a video that trended over the weekend, sighted by TheNigeriaLawyer, showed Chukwuka Ikwuazom SAN saying, “Our leaders from this zone of the NBA have gathered in this moment for any reason. I greatly appreciate it and I don’t take it for granted. My name is Chukwuka Ikwuazom. I am a partner in one of Nigeria’s largest law firms, a firm that was founded and nurtured by two prominent Yoruba men, the late Bankole Olumide Aluko, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, who passed in 2002, and Mr.Gbenga-oyebode, a member of the Order of the Federal Republic”

Meanwhile, speaking with the Publicity Secretary of the Egbe Amofin, Olayinka Sokayo, he informed TheNigerialawyer that there was no Amofin meeting held during the weekend and those at the event were some stakeholders and members of the lawyers from the Ibadan region.

He further added that whatever endorsement was made was in their individual capacities.

“For now, the Egbe Amofin has not endorsed any candidate, and if that is to be done, it will be communicated appropriately.

“We have a procedure for doing things, and if need be for one, it will be done accordingly. Those at the meeting spoke in their personal capacities and not for Egbe Amofin,” he added.
