Atalanta have confirmed the permanent transfer of Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman to Spanish giants Atlético Madrid, bringing to an end his three-and-a-half-year stay with the Serie A side.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Italian club announced: “Atalanta BC announce the permanent transfer of Ademola Lookman to Atlético de Madrid. The 28-year-old Nigerian international departs the Club after a three-and-a-half-season stint in Nerazzurri colours.”

Atlético Madrid had earlier disclosed that they had reached an agreement with Atalanta for the signing of the forward, subject to a successful medical and the formalisation of personal terms. The Spanish club later confirmed that Lookman has signed a long-term contract that will keep him at the club until June 2030.

Although official figures were not disclosed by the clubs, the deal is reportedly valued at around €40 million, comprising €35 million in guaranteed fees and €5 million in add-ons. Lookman is also expected to earn approximately €10 million over the four-year duration of his contract.

The transfer marks another major milestone in Lookman’s career, as he becomes the first English-born player to feature in the Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A and LaLiga. According to BBC Sport, only 21 players have played across Europe’s top leagues, while just three players have featured in all of the “big five” leagues.

Born in London, Lookman began his professional career at Charlton Athletic in 2015 before moving to Everton in 2017, where he scored on his Premier League debut. He later joined RB Leipzig in 2019 and went on loan spells with Fulham and Leicester City before sealing a permanent move to Atalanta in 2022.

During his time in Italy, Lookman established himself as one of Europe’s most lethal attackers, scoring 55 goals and providing 27 assists for Atalanta. His most iconic moment came in 2024 when he netted a historic hat-trick in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen, securing Atalanta’s first-ever European trophy.

At international level, Lookman represented England at youth level and won the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in 2017 before switching allegiance to Nigeria in 2022. He went on to score three goals at the Africa Cup of Nations, where the Super Eagles finished third. In 2024, he was crowned African Footballer of the Year and was the only African player shortlisted for the men’s Ballon d’Or, finishing 14th.

Atlético Madrid, currently third in LaLiga and trailing leaders Barcelona by 10 points after 22 matches, will be hoping Lookman’s arrival boosts their title challenge and Champions League campaign. Diego Simeone’s side are also set to face Club Brugge in the Champions League playoffs later this month.

Meanwhile, Lookman has penned an emotional farewell to Atalanta, expressing gratitude to the club, his teammates and the fans for their support throughout his time in Bergamo.

“Atalanta welcomed me warmly and pushed me to be the best version of myself,” he said. “The Europa League victory in 2023, the first major trophy in 61 years, and scoring a hat-trick on a night none of us will ever forget, will stay with me forever.”

He also paid tribute to the supporters, adding: “To the fans, your passion, your belief, your energy meant everything. From day one, you stood by me and by this team through every moment. Together, we achieved.”
