The Anambra South Senatorial District bye-election yesterday nearly descended into chaos after a heated confrontation between the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, and the APC governorship aspirant, Chief Nicholas Ukachukwu.
A video circulating online showed the Deputy Governor allegedly held by local youths who accused him of attempting to influence voters. The Commissioner for Environment, Engr. Felix Odumegwu, who was reportedly with the Deputy Governor, was also assaulted during the incident.
In the footage, Ukachukwu confronted Dr. Ibezim, telling him and his team they had no business at the polling unit, asserting, “You are not going anywhere. I will burn your cars if you make further attempt to move.” Ukachukwu justified his presence at the scene, stating it was his community and polling unit.
The Deputy Governor, in response, reportedly instructed his aides to “round him up,” prompting Ukachukwu to reply that Ibezim had no authority to command such action and was not a police officer.
