Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has said that he has constitutional and democratic rights to support and endorse an aspirant he believes possesses the capacity required to deliver.

Sule stated this in a statewide broadcast delivered in Lafia on Friday.

He insisted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will conduct its upcoming primaries through direct primary election, saying the method aligns with the party’s constitution and democratic principles.

The governor stated that the decision to adopt direct primaries reflected the choice of critical stakeholders within the party and guaranteed that all aspirants would have a fair opportunity.

Sule said he had exercised his right to endorse an aspirant he believes has the capacity, experience, and vision to build on the state’s progress, but stressed that the endorsement would not undermine other candidates.

“As Governor of Nasarawa State and leader of our great party in the State, I have exercised my constitutional and democratic right to support and endorse an aspirant whom I believe possesses the capacity, experience and vision to consolidate on the gains we have collectively made.

“Importantly, this does not foreclose the opportunities that exist in direct primary elections which our party critical stakeholders have opted for. Let me once more restate for the record that as a leader of the state, I will ensure a credible contest,” he said.

The governor called on APC members, supporters of other parties, youth groups, and community leaders to maintain peace and restraint as the 2027 election process gets underway.

He warned against inflammatory statements, political intimidation, and misinformation.

“No ambition is greater than the peace, unity and progress of our dear State,” he said.

“At the end of the primaries and elections, we shall all remain a very big family bound by a common destiny and united by our love for Nasarawa State.”

Sule urged security agencies to remain vigilant, professional, and impartial in safeguarding lives and property before, during, and after the primaries.

He also advised youths not to allow themselves to be used to foment violence.

“History will not remember us for the intensity of our political disagreements, but for our ability to rise above them in the interest of peace, development and future generations,” he said.

The governor noted that preparations for the 2027 elections had begun, with citizens declaring interests and holding consultations across political backgrounds, describing it as “the beauty of democracy.”
