King Charles and Pope Leo made history in the Sistine Chapel by praying side by side, marking the first time leaders of the Church of England and the Catholic Church have done so. Under the scrutinizing eyes of Michelangelo’s Last Judgment, when Pope Leo invited, “let us pray,” everyone including the King joined in, bridging a rift that has lasted since the Reformation in the 16th century.

The service, filled with music and prayers celebrating nature, symbolically unified the churches while offering the King and Queen a moment of calm during a visit overshadowed by scrutiny over Prince Andrew. Despite the spiritual significance, the media presence remained unavoidable. Inside the Vatican, King Charles remarked that the cameras were a “constant hazard,” while the Pope, speaking in relaxed tones, said, “You get used to it,” acknowledging the intense spotlight that accompanies such high-profile roles.

The visit’s was shaped by these media images, which capture moments of unity that would otherwise go unseen by the public due to security restrictions. Throughout the whistle-stop visit, the King and Queen experienced carefully choreographed ceremonial moments, surrounded by Renaissance masterpieces in one of the great cradles of Western civilization.

In the Sistine Chapel, the Catholic and Anglican choirs literally sang from the same hymn sheet, creating a visual and auditory symbol of reconciliation. The King, a known lover of art, music, and religion, appeared deeply engaged in the historic moment. Later, the royal couple paused for private reflection at the church of St Paul Outside the Walls, descending to the tomb of St Paul and offering prayers in a solemn setting, before returning to the grand basilica above, where choirs filled the vast ceilings.

The visit highlighted the historical connection between the English monarchy and the Catholic Church, with exchanges of gifts, including an icon reflecting King Charles’ fascination with Orthodox traditions. There were also ceremonial knighthoods exchanged between the King and Pope Leo. For Buckingham Palace, the visit marked the completion of a state trip previously postponed due to the Pope’s ill health..

In the Sistine Chapel, the music of English Catholic composer Thomas Tallis written during the religious conflicts of the 16th century resonated as a bridge between past and present, celebrating unity five centuries later. For King Charles, who has long sought to promote cohesion across communities, faiths, and nations, this moment symbolized the enduring mission of his reign: making history by bringing people together.

For centuries, a rift has existed between the British monarchy and the Catholic Church. It traces back to the first half of the 16th century, when Henry VIII was the king of England. In 1527, Henry had been married to his first of six wives, Catherine of Aragon, for 18 years. While they had six children over the years, only one daughter, Mary, lived past infancy.

Henry was frustrated with their inability to produce a male heir, arguing it was because their marriage was “blighted in the eyes of God”. To solve this problem, he wanted his marriage to Catherine annulled so he could wed another woman — Anne Boleyn. Being a Catholic, he needed the permission of the head of the church to do so. At the time, that was Pope Clement VII. Possibly under pressure from Catherine’s nephew, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, the pope refused to grant Henry’s annulment.

Henry’s solution was for England to follow the example of Protestant campaigners in other parts of Europe and break away from the authority of the pope — a process known as the Reformation.

That sparked a campaign now known as the English Reformation, where the Church of England broke away from the authority of the pope. Years later in 1534, Henry was declared the head of the Church of England — a move that formally severed ties with the Catholic Church. From then, the Church of England was shaped by both the Catholic and Protestant traditions into its own branch of Christianity, known as Anglicanism.

Because of the distinctions between Catholicism and Anglicanism, popes and British monarchs no longer participated in religious practices together — until Thursday in the Sistine Chapel.
