Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd.), on Saturday paid a visit to President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja, declaring that the President is doing his best across all sectors of governance and expressing confidence that Nigeria will ultimately achieve the peace it deserves.

The nonagenarian elder statesman, who ruled Nigeria from 1966 to 1975 and remains the country’s longest-serving head of state, told journalists after the closed-door meeting that the purpose of his visit was to appreciate the President for his efforts and acknowledge the progress the country is making under the current administration.

When asked by journalists to identify specific areas where the President needed to do better, Gowon was emphatic that there was none in particular.

“As far as it goes, isn’t he doing the best he can all round? So, there is no particular place. Every other area political, economic, social and of course the major problem that we have today, security, he is doing everything to deal with those for the good of Nigeria,” Gowon said.

He added: “There is no particular place. He has got to look after the interests of Nigeria in all areas. I came to see him and to thank him for all the good work that he is doing for the country.”

The former leader said he and the President discussed the progress Nigeria was making economically and in other areas during their meeting.

On the security challenges currently confronting the country, particularly the intensified insurgent attacks on military formations in the North-East in recent weeks, Gowon expressed confidence in the President’s approach.

He said only the President could rally Nigeria through its current challenges and that Tinubu was handling the situation without creating additional problems for the country.

“The problem that is happening today, it is only the government today, Mr. President, that can rally and deal with it, and he is dealing with it the best he can without creating any problem for Nigeria and for the country,” Gowon stated.

He assured Nigerians that the government was handling the situation appropriately and expressed optimism about the country’s future.

“I can assure you, the government is handling it the best it can to ensure that Nigeria, in the end, achieves the peace that it requires and that it deserves,” the former Head of State declared.

Saturday’s visit comes at a time when the Tinubu administration is facing criticism from opposition parties and civil society groups over rising insecurity, inflation, and the impact of economic reforms, particularly the removal of petrol subsidies implemented in June 2023 and the ongoing fuel price crisis triggered by the Middle East conflict.

In the North-East, terrorists believed to be members of the Islamic State West Africa Province have intensified attacks in recent weeks, killing at least three senior military officers and several soldiers and overrunning multiple military formations in Borno and Yobe states.

However, the administration has pointed to improvements in foreign reserves, crude oil production, revenue generation, and exchange rate stability as evidence of progress.

On Friday night, President Tinubu told media proprietors and executives that Nigeria had been pulled back from the brink of economic collapse and urged them to hold state and local governments accountable with the same level of scrutiny applied to the Federal Government.

General Gowon, who is widely respected as one of Nigeria’s foremost elder statesmen, has maintained an active role in national discourse despite his advanced age. He has often attended past meetings of the National Council of State virtually and continues to speak publicly on matters of national interest.
