The Management of Gynescope Specialist Hospital has broken its silence over the death of Mrs. Akudo Lovelyn John, who died hours after childbirth at the facility, describing circulating reports as “misleading, incomplete, and inaccurate.”

In a press statement issued on Friday, the hospital extended condolences to the deceased’s family while strongly defending the medical care provided, stating that the patient was attended to by qualified professionals who acted “promptly, responsibly, and in strict accordance with established medical standards.”

The hospital stated that all reasonable and available medical interventions were deployed in a sustained effort to preserve Mrs. John’s life.

“These efforts included extraordinary measures, such as voluntary blood donation by members of our medical and management team who were compatible and present during her care,” the statement read.

The hospital management said it wished to state “unequivocally that certain reports and statements currently circulating in the public domain are misleading, incomplete, and do not present a fair or accurate account of the events.”

It added that such narratives risk causing unnecessary distress to the bereaved family and unjustly impugning the integrity and professionalism of medical practitioners who acted in good faith, with diligence, and in the best interests of the patient.

The hospital explained that its initial silence was deliberate and motivated by respect for the memory of the deceased and consideration for the family as they mourned their loss.

“However, in view of the continued circulation of narratives that do not accurately reflect the circumstances surrounding the medical care provided, we consider it necessary to offer this clarification in the interest of fairness and truth,” the statement said.

The hospital’s statement comes days after Mr. Justice John, husband of the deceased, held a press conference alongside the Nigerian Bar Association, Lagos Branch, alleging medical negligence, emergency failure, and contradictory explanations by the hospital.

Mr. John had alleged that his wife suffered continuous bleeding and severe pain after a spontaneous vaginal delivery on December 3, 2025, which he said were poorly managed.

He claimed that despite a “clear 15-hour window between delivery and her death,” no urgent referral was made, and five pints of blood were infused without identifying the source of bleeding.

Mr. John also alleged a chaotic emergency response, claiming his wife fell off a stretcher during evacuation and that the ambulance was not readily functional.

The grieving lawyer had also pointed out that while the hospital issued a death certificate citing cardiac arrest, an autopsy conducted at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) confirmed the cause of death as haemorrhagic shock.

In its statement, Gynescope Specialist Hospital described itself as “an institution founded on respect for human life, compassion for patients, and adherence to the highest ethical and professional standards.”

“Our practice is guided by sound medical judgment, accountability, and a steadfast commitment to patient-centred care,” the hospital stated.

The hospital said it remains fully cooperative with all relevant regulatory and statutory authorities and will continue to engage the appropriate professional bodies in accordance with due process and established procedures.

Mr. John had earlier stated that petitions have been sent to the Lagos State Ministry of Health, the Hospital Management Board, and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, calling for disciplinary action against the doctors involved.

The hospital urged the public and the media to exercise restraint, empathy, and responsibility in their reportage, particularly on matters involving bereavement.

“Once again, our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this profoundly difficult time. We share in their sorrow as they mourn the loss of a wife, a mother, and a loved one,” the statement concluded.

The Chairman of the NBA, Lagos Branch, Mrs. Uchenna Akingbade, had earlier called for a thorough investigation into the matter, stating that the hospital had about 15 hours to put the situation under control but did not.

“We are here not just because he is our colleague, but because even if this were any Nigerian, it falls within our mandate to speak up,” Akingbade had said.

She called on the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, the Lagos State Government, and relevant hospital boards to investigate the matter, emphasizing that “fair hearing is a constitutional right” and that “justice must be seen and felt to be done.”

The matter is now subject to investigations by multiple regulatory bodies, including the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and the Lagos State Government health authorities.

A coroner’s inquest has also been initiated to determine the circumstances surrounding Mrs. John’s death.

The NBA Lagos Branch has stated it will continue to monitor the investigations and coroner’s inquest, insisting that accountability and patient safety must remain paramount.
