The Nigerian Bar Association Election Working Group (NBA-EWG) released its report on the September 21, 2024 Edo State Gubernatorial Election, which the group was accredited to observe by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The NBA deployed observers to polling units across Edo’s 18 Local Government Areas.

The report described the election as generally orderly and peaceful, despite some logistical and technical challenges. Notably, voter turnout was very low, with some polling units recording less than 10% of registered voters casting ballots. This was despite a heavy security presence from various agencies that helped maintain order.

Observers reported a few concerning incidents, including gunshots at one polling location after an altercation between a politician and voter. There were also attempts at voter inducement through money noted at some polling units.

However, the NBA-EWG commended the conduct of voters overall, as well as the professionalism of INEC officials and security personnel, in contributing to a largely smooth electoral process. The Biometric Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) functioned well in most locations.

“The Nigerian Bar Association Election Working Group observed that the 2024 Edo State Governorship Election was generally orderly, however, there were logistical and technical challenges in some areas,” the report concluded.

The group recommended that INEC focus on more timely deployment of election materials, improve voter education to boost turnout and trust, and implement stronger measures against voter inducement. With the right changes, observers hope to see increased participation and public confidence in Edo’s next election.
