The tragic incident occurred around 11 p.m. as the vehicle was travelling from Abuja to Otukpo. Eyewitnesses told DAILY POST that the gunmen opened fire upon sighting the vehicle, fatally striking the driver. The vehicle veered off the road and plunged into nearby bushes before coming to a halt.
“The driver was hit immediately. The vehicle lost control and crashed into the bush. That was when they [the attackers] dragged everyone out and took them away,” a witness recounted.
The body of the slain driver, identified as a native of Adoka in Otukpo Local Government Area, has since been recovered and conveyed to his hometown for burial rites.
The abandoned vehicle was later discovered at the scene by security personnel. In response to the incident, military operatives were deployed to the area and have commenced a manhunt to track down the perpetrators and rescue the abducted passengers.
At the time of filing this report, the identities and number of abducted persons remain unclear. Authorities are yet to release an official statement.
