A vigilante operative was killed and five operational vehicles burnt when gunmen attacked a vigilante facility in Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, in the early hours of Thursday.

The attack, which targeted members of Agunechemba, a local security outfit established by the Anambra State Government in January, has sparked renewed concerns over rising insecurity in the South-east.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the assailants set fire to parts of the security office during the assault, which led to a gun duel between the gunmen and the vigilante operatives.

“The security operatives, in an attempt to resist the gunmen during the gun duel, recorded a fatal injury on one of their members. Some parts of the security office also got burnt by the hoodlums,” Ikenga stated in a press release on Thursday night.

A resident of Umunze, who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES on condition of anonymity, said the attack left the community in shock. “We are scared because this vigilante group has been helping in maintaining some level of peace,” the source said.

In response to the attack, a joint security task force led by the police has taken control of the area, with efforts underway to track down the perpetrators. Ikenga called on residents in surrounding communities to provide useful information to aid the investigation.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ikioye Orutugu, strongly condemned the attack and urged residents to collaborate with law enforcement in the fight against criminal elements.

This latest incident comes amid a worsening security situation in the South-east, where armed groups have continued to launch coordinated attacks on security personnel, government officials, and public infrastructure.

In January, a similar attack occurred along Amesi-Uga Road in Umuchu, Aguata Local Government Area, where gunmen ambushed another group of vigilante operatives.

While the Nigerian government continues to blame the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for the rising wave of violence in the region, the group has consistently denied involvement in the attacks.

IPOB is agitating for the creation of an independent Biafran state from the South-east and parts of the South-south regions of Nigeria.

The Anambra State Government has yet to issue an official statement on the Umunze attack as of press time.
