Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano has approved a subsidy of N500,000 for each of the state intending pilgrims for the 2024 Hajj in Saudi Arabia.

Lamin Dan-Baffa, the Director-General of the State Pilgrims Welfare Board, said this when he briefed newsmen on Wednesday in Kano.

“Considering the current economic hardship the people are facing, increase in the Hajj fare is a great challenge to many intending pilgrims , the subsidy is to alleviate their sufferings.

“Those who have already paid part-payment to the board will benefit from the subsidy as over 2,900 intending pilgrims have already paid to the board, ” he said.

Mr Dan-Baffa urged all intending pilgrims to ensure that they paid the remaining balance before March 28 as directed by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON.

However, this gesture by the Kano State Government has drawn criticism from many who question why such a subsidy has not been extended to the education sector. Critics argue that the state’s education system is in dire need of financial support and that the government should prioritize funding for schools, students, and educational infrastructure.

They point out that many students in Kano State face challenges such as inadequate learning materials, dilapidated classrooms, and a lack of qualified teachers. These critics believe that the government should focus on improving the quality of education and providing better opportunities for students, rather than subsidizing religious pilgrimages.
