President Bola Tinubu has charged the newly appointed service chiefs to deliver tangible results in the fight against insecurity, warning that Nigerians will not accept excuses as the country is eager to celebrate lasting peace.

Speaking at the decoration ceremony for the new military chiefs held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Tinubu ordered them to confront and eliminate emerging armed groups in the North-Central, North-West, and parts of the South.

“We must not allow these new threats to fester. We must be decisive and proactive. Let us smash the new snakes right in the head,” the president said.

Tinubu praised the armed forces for their achievements in reclaiming occupied territories, rescuing kidnapped victims, and weakening terrorist networks but noted that the security landscape remains volatile. “Security threats are constantly evolving and mutating,” he said, adding that the government would provide all necessary support to help them succeed.

Congratulating the officers on their appointment and confirmation by the Senate, the president emphasized that security is the foundation of national development. “Security is an essential element without which everything else is rendered meaningless. There cannot be sufficient development if this fundamental aspect of human need is unmet,” he said.

The newly decorated officers include General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff; Lieutenant General Wahidi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff; Vice Admiral Idi Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff; and Air Marshal Sunday Aneke as Chief of Air Staff. Major General Emmanuel Undiendeye retained his position as Chief of Defence Intelligence but was elevated to Lieutenant General.

In his response, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Oluyede, assured Nigerians that the military would not fail in its duty. “We are going to do our very best with the support of Mr. President, the government, and the good people of Nigeria. Without the support of Nigerians, we can hardly achieve anything,” he said.

The ceremony was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and other senior government officials.

The new Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Wahidi Shaibu, pledged to review the security landscape and deploy new strategies to defeat terrorism and banditry. “We obviously live in tough times, but I have no doubt that we are tough people too. I want to assure Mr. President and Nigerians that we shall not disappoint the nation,” he stated.

Similarly, the new Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, vowed to lead a decisive, disciplined, and technology-driven Navy focused on tackling maritime crimes, oil theft, and piracy. “Our maritime environment remains threatened by crude oil theft, sea robbery, bunkering, and drug trafficking. We will confront these threats decisively,” he said.

For his part, the new Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, promised to “leave no stone unturned” in ensuring swift improvement in national security, pledging loyalty to the president and prioritizing personnel welfare. “Together, we will leave no stone unturned in discharging our constitutional roles to bring about lasting peace,” he affirmed.

The event marks the fourth major reshuffle of Nigeria’s military leadership since the All Progressives Congress (APC) came to power in 2015, reflecting President Tinubu’s renewed push to strengthen the country’s security architecture.
