Kano state governor Abdullahi Ganduje says the Hisbah—or Sharia police—is deviating from its main function and would require an overhaul of its board.

It comes amidst moves to sign into law Kano’s new family law.

Ganduje spoke in Kano after contracting marriages for 70 couples at a mass wedding.

“Government will not take it anymore, the wrong doings being committed by the leadership of Hisbah,” he said

“The leadership that is expected to be guided by the teachings of Qur’an and Hadith of the Holy Prophet (SAW) is being guided by the opinions of some individuals.

“And unfortunately, the Hisbah leaders because of their ignorance believe that praising people is the right thing to do. This is unacceptable and government must address this problem,” he said.

“Government has its role to play, Kano emirate council has role to play and the entire Ummah also has roles to play. Hisbah being an organisation established for societal reorientation has a greater role in ensure full implementation of law.”

He said the Hisbah would have to be overhauled to help full implementation of the family law.

Emir of Kano, HRH Muhammadu Sanusi II, who conceived the Kano State Family Law, said the law was meant to addresses challenges affecting marriages in the state.

“The law, when implemented, will address so many issues related to marriage including rampant divorce, inheritance, broken homes and rights of divorcee on his former husband and rights of husband over his ex-wife among other things,” said the emir.

The mass wedding is the 4th phase in Kano. A total 1,500 couples have slated for mass weddings.
