Nigeria has recorded its highest representation in global higher education rankings, with 24 universities listed in the 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings and Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings.

The figure makes Nigeria the most represented country in Sub-Saharan Africa in the latest rankings and reflects a steady rise from the 21 Nigerian universities listed in the 2024 and 2025 editions.

The University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos led the Nigerian institutions, maintaining their places among the country’s top-ranked universities. Bayero University Kano also emerged as one of Nigeria’s strongest performers in the 2026 rankings.

A breakdown of the Nigerian entries showed that 17 are federal universities, four are state-owned institutions, while three are private universities.

The development highlights broad-based progress across Nigeria’s tertiary education system, with federal, state and private institutions gaining increased visibility in international rankings.

The 2026 rankings also showed growing recognition for specialised institutions, especially federal universities of technology and agriculture.

State-owned universities also continued to improve their academic standing through enhanced research output, institutional performance and wider visibility.

The ranked Nigerian universities are the University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, Bayero University Kano, Covenant University, Landmark University, Ahmadu Bello University, Federal University of Technology, Minna, University of Ilorin, University of Jos and University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Others are Babcock University, Delta State University, Abraka, Ekiti State University, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Federal University Oye-Ekiti and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology.

Also listed are Lagos State University, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Benin, University of Calabar and University of Port Harcourt.

The latest performance signals improved international recognition for Nigerian universities and reinforces the country’s growing influence in the higher education landscape across Sub-Saharan Africa.
