The President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, on Monday dismissed the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers’ (NUPENG) criticism of the company’s recent petrol price reduction and rollout of compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks.
Addressing journalists at the Dangote Refinery on the first anniversary of gasoline production, Dangote mocked the union’s description of the fuel price cut as a “Greek gift.” “They said we gave Nigerians a Greek gift. Even if it’s a Greek gift, it means that it is a gift that will still be there all the time,” he said.
Dangote stressed that the refinery’s CNG truck initiative would create at least 24,000 jobs while ensuring Nigerians no longer face decades-long fuel queues. “We have been battling fuel queues since 1975, but today Nigerians are witnessing a new era,” he said.
Reflecting on the challenges of establishing the refinery, Dangote noted that the project involved enormous risks, with warnings from industry experts, investors, and government officials. “Had the project failed, lenders would have taken our assets. But we believed in Nigeria and Africa,” he added.
Since production began, petrol prices have fallen from nearly N1,100 to N841 in the Southwest, Abuja, Delta, Rivers, Edo, and Kwara. Dangote also revealed that the refinery exported over 1.1 billion litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) between June and early September 2025.
On employment, he emphasised that the refinery has not displaced workers but is generating thousands of new jobs, including drivers, mechanics, and fleet managers. “Our employees earn salaries three times the minimum wage, with life and health insurance, and lifelong pensions,” he said.
Dangote also addressed the broader goal of industrialisation, urging Nigeria to protect local industries and discourage the dumping of cheap imports. “Other nations were not industrialised by outsiders. We must build and industrialise our own economies,” he said, advocating legislation to support the Federal Government’s ‘Nigeria First’ policy.
He concluded by highlighting Nigeria’s role in Africa’s economic growth, noting that industrialisation would prevent job losses, reduce poverty, and attract investment across the continent.
