The Nigerian Bar Association has adopted a Disability Inclusion Policy aimed at promoting accessibility, non-discrimination, reasonable accommodation and equal participation for lawyers and law students with disabilities.

Chairperson of the NBA Lawyers with Disabilities Forum, Patience Etumudon, disclosed this in Asaba, Delta State, during a stakeholders’ summit on disability inclusion organised by the forum.

Etumudon described the adoption of the policy as a major milestone in the campaign for disability rights and inclusion within the legal profession.

According to her, the policy, championed by the NBA Lawyers with Disabilities Forum, is designed to remove barriers confronting lawyers with disabilities and ensure their active participation in the activities and decision-making processes of the association.

She said the policy places accessibility at the centre of NBA programmes, conferences and other professional engagements, while also encouraging law firms, NBA branches and legal institutions to provide environments that accommodate persons with disabilities.

Etumudon noted that the initiative reflects the NBA’s commitment to equal opportunities for all legal practitioners and law students, regardless of physical challenges.

Speaking at the event, the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary of the Delta State Ministry of Justice, Omamuzo Erebe, said the policy represents a shift from sympathy to the protection and enforcement of rights.

Erebe stressed that lawyers with disabilities deserve equal opportunities and the necessary support to enable them perform their professional duties effectively.

He added that Delta State has enacted anti-discrimination laws, strengthened support systems for persons with disabilities and established enforcement measures to ensure compliance with accessibility standards.
