Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the rescue of a 33-year-old man, identified simply as Olu, who attempted to take his own life by jumping into the lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge on Tuesday.

The incident occurred after the victim reportedly drove his silver Lexus SUV to the Yaba axis of the bridge, parked the vehicle, and jumped into the lagoon.

According to sources, Olu, who resides in Ibadan, Oyo State, allegedly travelled to Lagos on the day of the incident with the intention of committing suicide after suffering significant financial losses in cryptocurrency investments.

He was, however, quickly spotted after the fall, prompting swift intervention. The Yaba Divisional Police Officer, CSP Adegbemi Isiaka, was alerted and immediately mobilised a nearby fisherman to assist in the rescue operation. The victim was pulled out of the water and rushed to a hospital for urgent medical attention.

A source familiar with the incident said the young man is the first of two children, adding that his parents reside separately in the United Kingdom and Ibadan.

“He drove from Ibadan just to jump from the Third Mainland Bridge. He said he lost money in his investment and could not cope,” the source said. “Fortunately, he was seen immediately, and the DPO ensured a fisherman helped rescue him.”

The source also noted that the victim’s vehicle was later moved to a police station for safekeeping.

Confirming the development, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said the victim has since been discharged from hospital and handed over to his mother and other family members who travelled to Lagos upon receiving the alert.

According to her, the family has also pledged to take him to a rehabilitation facility for further care, while he was cautioned that attempted suicide is a criminal offence under the law.

The incident came to public attention after businessman Isaac Fayose shared a viral video urging people to check on loved ones, suggesting that emotional distress may have played a role.

In the video, an eyewitness narrated how the man parked his vehicle, left his mobile phones inside, and jumped into the lagoon, before being quickly rescued by a fisherman and emergency responders who rushed to the scene.
