“Dutch Disease Must Be Overcome Through Renewable Energy” — Prof. Morocco-Clarke Charts Roadmap for Solar, Wind to Anchor Resilient Economy
“Nigeria Was Pre-Oil Solid Minerals Powerhouse” — Mining Cadastre DG Nkom Advocates Revived Exploration to Unlock Billions
“18 Unbroken Years of Intellectual Stewardship” — Prof. Idornigie SAN Applauds J-K Gadzama LLP’s Dedication to National Discourse

In a timely virtual gathering amid global energy shifts, the 18th edition of the J-K Gadzama LLP Annual Public Lecture convened scholars, policymakers, and industry leaders on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, to tackle Nigeria’s economic vulnerabilities head-on. Themed “Beyond Oil: Diversifying Nigeria’s Economy through Sustainable Natural Resource Management,” the event underscored the imperative for the nation to leverage its untapped renewable and mineral resources to foster long-term prosperity.

Hosted by Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama, OFR, SAN, C.Arb, Life Bencher, and Founding Principal Partner of J-K Gadzama LLP, the lecture drew a diverse audience of thought leaders eager to reimagine Nigeria’s resource-driven future. In his welcoming address, Gadzama expressed profound gratitude to the distinguished chairman, keynote speaker, discussants, and participants for their contributions. He galvanized attendees with a call to action: “I inspire us to move from dependency to diversification, from extraction to innovation, and from rhetoric to results. Together, we can chart a path toward a Nigeria that thrives beyond oil, transitioning from a monolithic to a diversified economy and thereby overcoming the Dutch disease. Ultimately, our goal is to build a nation that manages her natural wealth not merely for profit, but for posterity—our children and our children’s children.”

Presiding over the proceedings was Mr. Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, Chairman of Alphine Group, who set an optimistic tone in his opening remarks. Hayatu-Deen lauded J-K Gadzama LLP for its steadfast dedication to advancing national discourse, while extending thanks to the speakers, panelists, and participants “who continue to lend their intellect and influence to the national cause.”

The intellectual core of the event was Professor Ayodele Morocco-Clarke’s keynote address, where the Professor of Energy, Climate, and Environmental Law & Policy dissected the geopolitical and environmental pressures accelerating the world’s departure from fossil fuels. Morocco-Clarke stressed that Nigeria’s heavy reliance on oil exposes it to volatility, climate risks, and the “Dutch disease” – a resource curse stifling other sectors. “There is an urgent need for Nigeria to diversify its economy and harness its vast renewable energy resources to drive sustainable development,” she asserted, while pinpointing institutional weaknesses, lack of political resolve, and security hurdles as primary barriers. Her lecture painted a roadmap for renewables like solar and wind to anchor a resilient economy.

The conversation deepened through a dynamic panel discussion, moderated by key figures in resource governance and law. Engr. Obadiah Simon Nkom, fnmgs, fnse, fnsme, Director-General of the Nigeria Mining Cadastre Office, traced Nigeria’s mining legacy, recalling its pre-oil era as a solid minerals powerhouse. He detailed the evolution from the National Oil and Ore Mining Agency to the modern Cadastre Office, advocating for revived exploration to unlock billions in untapped value.

Prof. Peter Akper, OFR, SAN, a leading voice in mining law and policy, complemented this with a sobering review of oil’s dominance. He pushed for a “multi-faceted approach,” spotlighting agriculture, mining, and manufacturing as viable revenue streams to dilute oil’s stranglehold and mitigate economic shocks.

Adding an international lens, Mr. Gino Cocchiaro, Consultant at Jurist Energy Transition Africa, framed Nigeria’s challenges within Africa’s broader energy metamorphosis. He called for a “just and inclusive” pivot to renewables, warning against over-dependence on extractive industries and urging equitable policies that empower local communities in the transition.

Rounding out the panel, Mr. Victor Daniel, an Associate at J-K Gadzama LLP, championed solid minerals with fervor, drawing parallels to Australia – a federal peer that transformed its geology into global wealth. Daniel lamented Nigeria’s underperformance despite structural similarities, proposing targeted investments to mirror such success.

The event concluded on a note of affirmation with a goodwill message from Prof. Paul Idornigie, SAN, who hailed Chief Gadzama and his team for perpetuating the lecture series over 18 unbroken years. “Maintaining this streak is no small feat,” Idornigie remarked, applauding their “dedication and commitment” to intellectual stewardship.

Mr. Mohammed Monguno, former Attorney General of Borno State and Senior Partner at J-K Gadzama LLP, sealed the session with a heartfelt vote of thanks, acknowledging the speakers and participants for their invaluable engagement.
