The trial of Adeniyi Mobolaji, the driver involved in the tragic December 29, 2025, car crash that killed two close associates of former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, has been adjourned for the third time by the Ogun Magistrate Court 1 sitting in Sagamu.

Magistrate Olufunmilayo Somefun rescheduled the case to April 16, 2026, after the prosecution informed the court that it was not yet ready to proceed.

Lead prosecutor R.D. Kadiri, representing the Director of Public Prosecutions, told the court that fresh information received on the morning of the hearing needed to be incorporated into the initial report and case file before the prosecution could proceed.

Magistrate Somefun granted the adjournment to allow the prosecution adequate time for proper preparation.

Defence counsel Abiodun Olalekan expressed frustration over the repeated delays, describing them as a potential waste of time. He urged the prosecution to expedite proceedings and ensure there would be no further postponements when the case returns on April 16.

Monday’s adjournment marks at least the third time the case has been rescheduled, following earlier adjournments to February 25 and then March 17. The Director of Public Prosecutions, which recently took over the prosecution of the case, has been working to build its evidence and prepare witnesses.

Mobolaji, 46, who has served as Anthony Joshua’s driver for several years, faces a four-count charge including dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and driving without a valid national driver’s licence.

He has pleaded not guilty to all counts. Through his counsel, the defendant has attributed the crash to brake failure rather than recklessness or speeding.

The court previously granted Mobolaji bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties.

The incident occurred on December 29, 2025, on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway when the Lexus SUV driven by Mobolaji, which was carrying Anthony Joshua and members of his team, collided with a stationary truck.

The crash claimed the lives of two members of Joshua’s inner circle — his personal trainer Latif Ayodele, popularly known as Latz, and his strength and conditioning coach Sina Ghami. Both men were described by Joshua as close friends and loyal team members who had been with him throughout significant portions of his boxing career.

Joshua and Mobolaji sustained minor injuries in the collision. The former heavyweight champion later confirmed publicly that he was stable and recovering.

The deaths of Ayodele and Ghami have taken a significant emotional toll on Joshua, who has publicly mourned the men he described as his brothers. The boxing champion has continued to share tributes to his fallen associates around significant dates, including Mother’s Day, highlighting the depth of his grief amid his ongoing recovery and career considerations.

The high-profile nature of the case, linked to one of the biggest names in world boxing, has attracted sustained public and media attention both in Nigeria and internationally. The repeated adjournments have only heightened interest, with many following the proceedings closely to see whether the prosecution will establish that the crash was caused by dangerous driving or whether the defence’s brake failure explanation will hold.

The case returns to court on April 16, 2026.
