Immediate Past Secretary General of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Adesina Adegbite, has defended the N300 million payment made to the NBA by the Rivers State Government under Governor Siminalayi Fubara, stating that the funds were meant for specific conference souvenirs and not for hosting rights of the NBA Annual General Conference.

Speaking in an interview on Arise TV on Sunday, Adegbite described the payment as an “absolutely irrevocable gift” that was voluntarily given by the elected Rivers State government for a specific purpose.

“The governor of Rivers State was not coerced into giving that money,” Adegbite explained, adding that the funds were earmarked for a specific conference souvenir item that would have been branded and tagged as sponsored by the Rivers State Government.

He dismissed claims by the State’s Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibokete Ibas (Rtd), that the money was payment for hosting rights, calling it “an absolute falsehood.”

“NBA has never requested money for hosting rights for anything whatsoever. NBA goes to government or agencies or individuals for support towards its activities, but not for hosting rights,” Adegbite clarified.

The former NBA scribe further argued that the current administration in Rivers State lacks legal standing to demand a refund, saying, “How does NBA release money to a government that it has stacked on its own as a non-constitutional government?”
