President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has forwarded a list of ambassadorial nominees to the Senate for confirmation, signaling progress in filling key diplomatic positions.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the development during Wednesday’s plenary, revealing that the initial list comprises three nominees: Kayode Are from Ogun State, Aminu Dalhatu from Jigawa, and Ayodele Oke. “The list contains three names for now. I am sure others will follow,” Akpabio said after reading the President’s letter to the upper chamber.

The nominees, described by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, as seasoned security and diplomatic figures, are set to represent Nigeria in strategic foreign postings, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and France.

Ambassador Amin Mohammed Dalhatu previously served as Nigeria’s envoy to South Korea during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, where he strengthened bilateral cooperation between Abuja and Seoul. Ambassador Ayodele Oke, a graduate of Emory University, Atlanta, is a former Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and earlier represented Nigeria at the Secretariat of the Commonwealth of Nations in London. Retired Colonel Lateef Kayode Are brings decades of national security experience, having served as Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS) from 1999 to 2007, National Security Adviser in 2010, and an officer in the Directorate of Military Intelligence.

The Senate is expected to commence vetting and confirmation proceedings in the coming weeks, with further nominees anticipated in subsequent batches.
