In an ambitious infrastructure development initiative, the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has unveiled plans by the federal government to construct a supersonic highway that will dramatically reduce travel time between Lagos and Abuja to just four hours.

Minister Umahi made this groundbreaking announcement during a courtesy visit to the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, as part of his official visit to the South West region. The proposed supersonic highway will commence alongside the planned 4th Mainland Bridge and will originate from Epe in Lagos State.

With this visionary project, the 4th Mainland Bridge Supersonic Highway is set to revolutionize travel, making it possible for motorists to cover the distance between Lagos and Abuja in just four hours.

Minister Umahi disclosed that the construction of this transformative highway will be undertaken through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement, and it is currently in the final stages of planning. The federal government anticipates that work on this groundbreaking project will commence within the next one to two months.

Explaining the framework, Minister Umahi highlighted the Highway Development Management Initiative (HDMI), which allows states and private investors to collaborate with the federal government. Under this initiative, stakeholders can either take over fully constructed roads for tolling and maintenance or undertake the construction of new roads and toll them, adhering to established agreements.

The minister also emphasized incorporating advanced road architecture into this endeavor, such as solar lighting and the installation of CCTV cameras to enhance road monitoring and visibility. These measures are expected to significantly reduce insecurity and provide essential services, including service stations and mini clinics, similar to international standards.

In his address, Minister Umahi affirmed his commitment to the welfare of the people and the importance of robust road infrastructure in boosting security, economic growth, trade, and education. He reiterated President Buhari’s strong dedication to ensuring that roads built will stand the test of time, with a lifespan of up to 50 years.

Minister Umahi noted that when people are facing challenges, their primary concern is road quality, not ownership, emphasizing that governments in Ogun, Lagos, and Oyo states are actively addressing this concern. He also urged those criticizing the efforts to fix Nigerian roads to refrain from playing politics and instead focus on the tangible progress being made.

Governor Dapo Abiodun expressed his gratitude to the minister for granting approval to state governments to take the initiative in road infrastructure development. He commended the minister’s capacity and understanding in facilitating such essential projects that will enhance transportation and connectivity in the region and the nation as a whole.

The proposed supersonic highway stands as a testament to the Nigerian government’s commitment to modernizing infrastructure and improving the quality of life for its citizens while promoting economic growth and development.
