The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy has announced the launch of a new initiative called the National Girls in ICT Competition aimed at promoting gender inclusivity and inspiring young girls to actively participate in the ICT sector.

According to a statement released by the Ministry on Tuesday, the competition is open to all aspiring Nigerian girls to showcase their skills and innovations in areas like coding, programming, web development, cybersecurity and data analytics.

Winners stand a chance to receive scholarships, laptops, trophies and certificates from the government. They will also have opportunities to network, learn new skills and gain recognition through workshops, training programs and mentoring from industry experts.

“As part of our commitment to promote gender inclusivity and inspire young girls to take the lead in the ICT sector, we are delighted to announce the start of the National Girls in ICT Competition,” the Ministry said.

Despite the rapid growth of Nigeria’s technology industry, women are significantly underrepresented. According to research, only about 30% tech companies are owned by women and over one-third employ no women at all.

The competition aims to tap into the huge potential of girls to drive innovation in the digital economy. Interested participants can visit the registration portal to sign up and receive further details on the 5-day training program and pitching events.
