A tragic incident has rocked the Alakia area of Ibadan, Oyo State, as a young male candidate sitting for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) was allegedly killed by a stray bullet fired by a police officer.

The incident occurred Tuesday morning along the busy Gbagi Market Road. The victim, a secondary school student, was on his way to write his examination, accompanied by his father and twin brother, when he was fatally struck.

Eyewitnesses report that police officers, said to be pursuing a Hilux vehicle suspected of carrying internet fraudsters or traffic offenders, opened fire indiscriminately. One of the bullets allegedly hit the boy, who was inside his father’s vehicle.

He was rushed to Welfare Hospital but was tragically declared dead on arrival.

The killing triggered immediate public outrage. Aggrieved youths took to the streets in protest and later carried the boy’s lifeless body to the Oyo State Government Secretariat, demanding justice and calling for immediate intervention from Governor Seyi Makinde.

Comrade Yemi Ezekiel Bello, President of the Save the Poor and Needy Charity Initiative (SPANCI), strongly condemned the incident and urged the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to launch a full investigation.

“Dear IGP and stakeholders, kindly investigate this case. It has been alleged that officers from the police and OYRTMA were chasing suspected Yahoo boys or traffic offenders and began shooting indiscriminately. A young boy, whose father has been solely caring for him and his twin brother since their mother left seven years ago, was killed in the process,” Bello said in a statement.

The incident has reignited public concern over the reckless use of firearms by Nigerian law enforcement agencies, particularly in civilian areas.
