The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has approved the employment of 34 resident doctors for residency training on a fixed term of seven years.

In a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the 34 medical doctors are the first batch of 60 medical residency trainees in eight faculties/specialties in FCTA hospitals approved for employment by the FCT Minister.

Olayinka said the employment of the 34 resident doctors will further enhance healthcare delivery in the FCT. He stated, “This is the first time this is being done outside employees of the Health Management Board, thereby giving doctors more opportunities and bringing more competent hands into healthcare delivery in the FCT.

“Among the 34 employed, five are in the psychiatry department, four in internal medicine, one in general surgery, one in anaesthesiology, eight in family medicine, six in ophthalmology, and nine in obstetrics and gynaecology.”

Olayinka added that the FCTA Civil Service Commission will soon commence the process for recruiting the remaining 26 resident doctors. He noted that the 26 include one for the psychiatry department, four in internal medicine, eight in general surgery, five in anaesthesiology, and eight in paediatrics.
