Prominent human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, SAN, has lauded the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), and INTERPOL for their successful collaboration in securing the extradition of murder suspect Benjamin Best Nnayereugo, popularly known as Kilaboi, from Qatar to Nigeria.
In a statement released on Saturday, Falana hailed the coordinated efforts that led to the return of the fugitive, who had fled the country in July 2023 following the brutal murder of his girlfriend, Miss Augusta Oseodion Onuwabhagbe, a 21-year-old undergraduate of Lead City University, Ibadan.
“Kudos to the AGF, the IGP, and INTERPOL for their combined efforts in ensuring justice is served. This successful extradition marks a significant step in the fight against impunity,” Falana stated.
He confirmed that Benjamin was extradited to Nigeria this morning after nearly two years on the run, adding that the outcome was the result of tireless tracking and legal advocacy.
“We thank the Nigerian government for cooperating with our law firm during the long pursuit of justice. Special appreciation goes to the mother of the deceased, Mrs. Cordelia Nneji Onuwabhagbe, who provided critical information that helped trace the suspect’s movements after fleeing Nigeria,” he said.
Falana emphasized the importance of public vigilance and persistence in criminal justice matters. “This is a challenge to all Nigerians to always pursue justice fearlessly. Ending impunity begins with collective commitment,” he added.
He also confirmed that the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has completed its investigation into the murder case and called on the Attorney-General of Lagos State, Mr. Lawal Pedro, SAN, to expedite the prosecution process.
“We urge the Lagos State Ministry of Justice to fast-track the arraignment and prosecution of the suspect so that justice may finally be served for Miss Augusta and her grieving family,” Falana concluded.
Miss Augusta was found dead on July 13, 2023, with multiple stab wounds at a residence in Oral Estate, Ikota, Ajah, Lagos. A petition filed by Falana’s chambers in September 2024 had called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the suspect, who had by then absconded.
