Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN); President, Centre for Change, Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin; Publicity Secretary, Afenifere, Mr Yinka Odumakin; Chairman, Nigeria Bar Association, Ikeja branch, Dele Oloke, among others, on Saturday, converged on Lagos, to remember late Chima Ubani.

Ubani, a former Executive Director of Civil Liberties Organisation, died 14 years ago in a motor accident along Potiskum-Maiduguri road on his way from an anti-deregulatory rally on September 21, 2005.

Speaking about the fallen rights activist, Falana said Ubani fought against injustice and died in the course of seeking justice for the oppressed and the downtrodden in the country.

He described him as a dogged fighter whose memories remained evergreen on the minds of Nigerians.

He said Ubani’s struggle in the fight for the validation of the annulled June 12, 1993 election believed to be won by late Moshood Abiola could not be easily wished away, saying that during that period, many people called him names.

The rights lawyer saluted Ubani’s widow, Ochuwa, saying that she deserved special commendation for single-handedly bringing up their four children after Ubani’s demise.

Also speaking, Okei-Odumakin, whose organisation – Centre for Change, organized the 14th anniversary, described Ubani as an intellectual, revolutionary communist, selfless to a fault, humble, unassuming and a great livewire of the human rights and pro-democracy movement.

She said his death remained an end to a robust life, dedicated to the service of humanity.
