Somalia’s Football Federation has expressed deep disappointment after United States immigration authorities denied entry to award-winning Somali referee, Omar Abdulkadir Artan, forcing him to miss what would have been Somalia’s historic officiating debut at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Artan, who was named the Confederation of African Football, CAF, 2025 Men’s Referee of the Year, was expected to become the first Somali official to referee at a World Cup finals.
However, he was reportedly barred from entering the United States despite holding a valid U.S. visa issued shortly before his trip.
According to reports, Artan arrived at Miami International Airport from Istanbul but was subjected to about 11 hours of interrogation before being held in a detention cell and later declared inadmissible by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
He was subsequently flown back to Turkey.
U.S. authorities initially cited unspecified “vetting concerns” as the basis for the refusal. A U.S. official later reportedly claimed that Artan was denied entry over an alleged association with suspected members of terror organisations.
The Somali Embassy in Kenya confirmed that Artan had a valid U.S. visa issued about a week before his travel.
Somalia, however, remains among countries affected by the Trump administration’s travel restriction policies.
Following the development, FIFA removed Artan from the tournament roster, explaining that it was not involved in host-country immigration decisions and must defer to national immigration authorities.
The decision has triggered strong reactions within Somalia and across the football community, with the Somali Football Federation describing the development as painful and disappointing.
The SFF said the U.S. decision had deprived Somalia of a major sporting milestone and denied Artan the opportunity to represent the country at the highest level of world football.
According to the federation, Artan’s appointment was a historic achievement earned through years of professionalism, dedication and integrity.
The SFF also said it had not received a clear official explanation from U.S. authorities on why Artan was deemed inadmissible despite holding valid travel documents.
The federation said it had contacted FIFA for urgent clarification and intervention, while also working with Somalia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports to understand the circumstances surrounding Artan’s repatriation.
Somalia’s sports ministry also criticised the decision, describing Artan’s rise as a source of honour and pride for the country.
The ministry said barring him from the tournament harmed him personally and undermined football’s commitment to fairness, merit, inclusion and the spirit of fair play.
The controversy has raised wider concerns about border restrictions affecting participants in the 2026 World Cup.
Apart from Artan’s case, members of Iran’s national team and Iraq’s media delegation have also reportedly faced intense border questioning, visa delays and entry difficulties while seeking to participate in the tournament.
Artan’s exclusion is now being viewed in Somalia not only as an immigration setback but as a missed national moment for a country that had hoped to mark its first appearance in World Cup officiating history.
