The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has issued a press release to address a recent incident at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) regarding cargo charges.

The incident, captured in a video circulating online, shows a disagreement between FAAN staff and a cargo agent over fees.

According to the press release, the individual involved was conducting illegal cargo operations and refused to pay the required charges. FAAN states the agent “behaved in an unacceptable manner, damaging equipment and straining resources.” They strongly deny any molestation by staff or requests for bribes, calling the claims “simply an act of blackmail.”

FAAN reminds cargo agents and the public that cargo operations must take place in designated areas, using proper vehicles and personnel, and paying the stipulated levies. These policies aim to ensure adherence to international best practices, prevent facility damage, and prioritize customer service and safety.

Specifically, FAAN imposes a fine of ₦5,000 for non-compliant cargoes due to:
– Failure to utilize designated cargo terminals
– Damage to carousels resulting from improper handling

“FAAN remains committed to providing clear guidance on our policies and procedures,” said Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection. “We advise the public to adhere to the rules guiding airport operations to avoid similar incidents in the future. By working together, we can ensure a safe and efficient airport experience for all.”
