Eminent indigenes of Bayelsa State, including former President Goodluck Jonathan, Governor Douye Diri, and Senator Seriake Dickson, yesterday paid glowing tributes to the life and legacy of the late deputy governor of the state, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.

Thousands of residents and mourners thronged the DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall, venue of the “Day of Tributes,” as part of the funeral activities to honour the late deputy governor, who died on December 11 last year after he slumped while carrying out official duties in his office at Government House.

In his tribute, former President Jonathan described the late deputy governor as an “extraordinary and selfless politician who worked diligently for the good of Bayelsa State.”

He said he was overtaken with disbelief when he learned of the passing of the deputy governor and prayed for divine comfort and consolation for the family, community, and the state.

Governor Diri, who broke down in tears while paying his tribute, said that while many described his late deputy governor as a consummate public servant, for him, he was a brother, friend, ally, and compatriot.

Diri, who also described his late deputy as a man of proverbs, said he had constituted a team to publish a compendium of his proverbs.

In his tribute, the immediate past governor of Bayelsa State and senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District, Seriake Dickson, described the late deputy governor as his mentee and family member, a relationship spanning over 30 years.

“He was an embodiment of service to the people. He kept and built relationships. I brought him, introduced him to politics, and mentored him. We have been on a journey of service lasting almost 30 years. I want to thank all mourners for their tribute and honour to him and his memory.”

Others who paid tributes include his family, former classmates, the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Abraham Ingobere, the Bayelsa caucus in the National Assembly led by Fred Agbedi, Bayelsa Elders Council, Bayelsa State Traditional Rulers Council, Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) led by Ambassador Boladei Igali, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Yenagoa branch, Ijaw National Congress (INC), Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), among others.

The late Senator Ewhrudjakpo will be buried in his community, Ofoni, in Sagbama Local Government Area of the state tomorrow.
