Bayo Akinlade, former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ikorodu Branch and anti-corruption advocate, has expressed concerns over the inappropriate dressing of some law school externs during their court attachments.

In a statement released on [insert date], Akinlade noted that some male externs have been seen wearing waistcoats without jackets or plain white shirts with black ties without jackets, while some female externs have been wearing white blouses without jackets. He emphasized that such dressing is improper and goes against the instructions provided by the Nigerian Law School.

“When some lawyers dress shabbily or inappropriately to Court, I do my best to let them know as it sometimes reflects on their professionalism and their level of appreciation for ethics in this noble profession,” Akinlade said.

The former NBA branch chairman revealed that he had escalated his concerns to the law school several times, and they have consistently reiterated that externs are required to wear black jackets during their externship. However, despite these instructions, some externs continue to dress inappropriately.

Akinlade called on lawyers in practice to correct improper dressing by externs and fellow colleagues, ensuring that they wear the proper combinations of attire even during chamber attachments. He emphasized that until there is an agreement or permission to wear traditional cultural attire to court, the suit remains the standard dress code.

“It is unfortunate to still see some externs not properly dressed to court despite instructions from law school,” Akinlade lamented. “I would like to implore lawyers in practice to please correct improper dressings by externs and even fellow colleagues and to ensure that even during chamber attachments they ensure that the externs wear the proper combinations of attires.”

The Nigerian Law School externship program is an essential part of the training for aspiring lawyers, providing them with practical experience in court proceedings and legal practice. The dress code for externs is designed to maintain the professionalism and decorum expected in the legal profession.
