Waziri also urged political leaders to prevail on their supporters to avoid violence during electioneering. She made the statement on Sunday on the sidelines of an event on Victoria Island, Lagos. Waziri said, “I believe the elections will hold as scheduled. My only concern is the level of toxicity in the statements of some political leaders. This is not really good for the polity, especially now that campaigns will formally begin in a matter of days from now. This is the time for every patriotic political leader to avoid hate speech – that is capable of inciting their followers and supporters into violence.” She said the country needed peace and unity to have successful elections in 2019 and that the nation had lost too many innocent souls due to violence. Waziri said, “If we don’t play up integrity, transparency, and accountability in assessing those who want to lead us, then we must be joking about the future of the country.”]]>
