The management of the University of Jos has directed the immediate evacuation of all students from university hostels due to escalating security concerns in Jos, triggered by the suspected bandit attack in the neighbouring Angwan Rukuba community that killed at least 28 people.

In a statement on Wednesday, Emmanuel Madugu, Deputy Registrar (Information and Public Relations), said Vice-Chancellor Professor Tanko Ishaya cited the “general security situation in Jos” and “near-chaotic scenarios” near the university that heightened tensions and posed risks to students in the hostels.

“In view of the general security situation in Jos, and particularly the near-chaotic scenarios that unfolded today (Wednesday, 1st April 2026) in areas near the university, which heightened tensions and threatened the safety of students in the hostels, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, has directed the immediate evacuation of students of the university from the hostels,” the statement read.

In an earlier statement on Tuesday, Madugu disclosed that two students and a staff member of the university were among those affected by the Sunday attack on Angwan Rukuba, a community neighbouring the university in Jos North Local Government Area.

No fewer than 28 people were killed and several others were injured on Sunday after gunmen suspected to be bandits attacked the area.

Madugu said the evacuation is being facilitated by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who has provided transport services to carry out the assignment even within the curfew hours.

The state government had imposed a 48-hour curfew in Jos North LGA following the attack.

The university announced the following evacuation schedule:

  • Students whose parents or guardians live within Jos and its environs are to be evacuated starting from 3:00pm on Wednesday, April 1
  • Students whose parents live outside the state capital will be moved starting from 8:00am on Thursday, April 2

According to the statement, adequate security has been put in place to protect the hostels and university at large.

“The Vice-Chancellor assures the university community that management is exploring all means within its disposal to ensure that the university is safe,” Madugu said.

“Further relevant updates will be communicated as management directs. In fragile times like these, may our confidence in the LORD be steadfast.”

As part of safety measures, the university management had earlier taken the following actions:

  • Suspended all examinations scheduled for the week, rescheduling them until after the Easter celebration due to rising security concerns
  • Postponed its 120th inaugural lecture, which was earlier scheduled for Tuesday
  • Changed the venue of the 50th induction ceremony of its pharmaceutical students

Joyce Lohya Ramnap, the state Commissioner for Information, said Governor Caleb Mutfwang “strongly condemned” the attack, describing it as “barbaric and unprovoked.”

The attack sparked outrage on social media, with many Nigerians questioning the government’s ability to protect citizens from recurring violence.

On Sunday, March 29, 2026, gunmen attacked Angwan Rukuba in Jos North Local Government Area, killing at least 28 people and injuring several others.

The community is close to the university, and eyewitnesses reported that the attackers arrived in a Sharon bus and wore military-style attire.

The attack occurred around 7:30pm on Palm Sunday, with gunmen firing indiscriminately at residents who were either seated or standing by the roadside in what eyewitnesses described as a busy market area.

The evacuation of students from UNIJOS hostels underscores the severity of the security situation in Plateau State following the Palm Sunday massacre.

The decision to evacuate students — with the governor providing transport even during curfew hours — signals that authorities consider the threat significant enough to warrant immediate action.

For students, the disruption to their academic calendar, with examinations postponed until after Easter, adds to the uncertainty caused by the violence.

The fact that two students and a staff member were among those affected in the Angwan Rukuba attack brings the tragedy close to the university community and highlights the vulnerability of educational institutions located near areas prone to violence.

Students have been advised to remain calm, comply with security directives, and stay indoors where necessary.

The Students Union Government has also communicated updates regarding the evacuation schedule adjustments due to curfew and safety considerations.

Further details are expected from university management as the situation evolves.
