United States President Donald Trump on Saturday announced plans to impose a 10 percent tariff on countries that have deployed military forces to Greenland, as part of his renewed push for the United States to annex the Arctic island.

Trump said in a post on Truth Social that the tariffs would apply to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland, with implementation set for February 1, 2026.

He wrote, “Starting on February 1st, 2026, all of the above-mentioned countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland) will be charged a 10 percent tariff on any and all goods sent to the United States of America.”

Trump added that the tariffs would rise to 25 percent on June 1 and would remain in force “until such time as a deal is reached for the complete and total purchase of Greenland.”

“These countries, who are playing this very dangerous game, have put a level of risk in play that is not tenable or sustainable,” Trump wrote.

“Therefore, it is imperative that, in order to protect global peace and security, strong measures be taken so that this potentially perilous situation ends quickly and without question.”

All eight affected countries are members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Trump accused the countries of having “journeyed to Greenland, for purposes unknown,” and reiterated his long-held position that the United States must acquire the territory for national security reasons.

He said Greenland is critical to the proposed Golden Dome missile defense system and raised concerns about potential Russian or Chinese influence in the Arctic region.

Greenland, a sparsely populated Arctic territory, hosts the northernmost US military base and possesses significant reserves of oil, natural gas, and minerals. Its strategic location near emerging Arctic shipping routes has drawn increased attention as rising temperatures reduce sea ice.

Meanwhile, European Union leaders warned against Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on European countries until he secures the purchase of Greenland.

Cyprus, which holds the rotating presidency of the European Council, announced an extraordinary meeting of EU ambassadors in Brussels for Sunday afternoon.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa issued a joint statement hours after Trump threatened multiple European nations with tariffs of up to 25 percent.

“Tariffs would undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral,” they said.

“Europe will remain united, coordinated, and committed to upholding its sovereignty,” the statement added.

The EU also expressed solidarity with Denmark and Greenland, noting that dialogue remains essential.

“The EU stands in full solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland,” the statement said, adding that it remained committed to building on talks already initiated between Denmark and the United States.

German MEP Manfred Weber, leader of the conservative European People’s Party, said Trump’s latest remarks cast doubt on the EU–US trade deal negotiated last year.

“The EPP supports the EU–US trade deal, but given Donald Trump’s threats regarding Greenland, approval is not possible at this stage,” Weber said.

He added that zero-percent tariffs on US products should be put on hold.

Brussels and Washington reached a deal in July under which most EU exports would face a 15 percent US levy, though negotiations on additional trade concessions are ongoing.
