Re: Harrasment and Intimidation of #ENDSARS Protestors

The NBA Abuja Branch is monitoring the developing #ENDSARS protests across the country and particularly within the FCT.

It is worth restating that Citizens have every right to call for improved policing and to hold those in power accountable.

The right to protest is constitutional and inalienable and should be protected by the Nigerian Police Force.

The public outcry against the rogue activities of some police officers should serve as a barometer for measuring public stewardship. The deployment of teargas and force against peaceful protesters exercising a God-given fundamental human right cannot stand the test of law or morality.

The leadership of the Police needs to create a conducive atmosphere for dialogue on the #ENDSARS movement.

The NBA Abuja Branch adopts and reiterates the call by the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Olumide Akpata, on the need for the Nigeria Police Force to secure the safety of the lives and property of all Nigerians, including members of the peaceful protest.

I, personally, along with the NBA Abuja Branch Human Rights Committee and Pro Bono Legal Team are available to provide assistance to everyone who needs it. This is pursuant to the statement of the NBA President dated 9th October, 2020 to “deploy our human and material resources in this regard.”

Silencing dissenters will never make Nigeria great. Injustice against one is injustice against all!
