Leader of the Shi’ites movement in Nigeria, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, who is standing trial before a Kaduna High Court, has had his case for bail adjourned to October 4, 2018. The Kaduna High Court, presided over by Justice Gideon Kurada, fixed October 4, 2018 to rule on the bail application of El-Zakzaky and his wife. El-Zakzaky’s counsel, Maxwell Kyon, moved for the bail for his client as the court resumed sitting on Thursday, August 2, in Kaduna. Briefing newsmen, Kyon said that they came prepared with their brief, while the government lawyers also came with theirs, and subsequently the matter was adjourned to October 4 He said that they were optimistic that Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenat, would regain freedom. “We have moved application for bail for the first and second accused and are optimistic of getting bail for our clients,” he said. Also speaking with newsmen, Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary, Kaduna State Ministry of Justice, Chris Umar said they have been able to serve the fourth and third accused through publications on newspapers. “Afterwards, if they fail to appear, we have sought the court to issue a bench warrant,” he said. Meanwhile, major roads in Kaduna were on lock-down from 9am Thursday, when the case was in court, with heavy presence of joint security operatives. The roads affected included: most stretch of Independence Way, portions of Ahmadu Bello Way, Ibrahim Taiwo Road and Waff Road. As was the case in previous court sessions, journalists were prevented from gaining access to the High Court premises while the case was been heard.
