A Federal High Court in Abuja has admitted in evidence $25,000 cash allegedly returned by Senator Shehu Sani from a business man, Alhaji Sani Dauda of ASD Motors Limited.

Senator Sani is being tried before the court on charges relating to his allege obtaining of $25,000 from Alhaji Dauda under false pretence, claiming that the said funds would be used to bribe judges.

Alhaji Dauda had, while testifying earlier in the case, told the court that Senator Sani later returned the money on learning that he petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The complainant also said he recorded the conversations between him and Senator Sani when he (the defendant) returned the money and begged him tthe complinant) for forgiveness.

Testifying on Wednesday as the 10th prosecution witness, an EFCC’s operative, who is the Investigative Police Officer (IPO) in the case, Bako Aliyu gave details of his investigation activities.

Aliyu also told the court how the investigators encouraged the complainant to record all the conversations between him and the defendant.

The witness said they (the EFCC investigators) confirmed from the Supreme Court of Nigeria that, as against the alleged claim by the defendant, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Muhammad had no interaction with Senator Sani in relation to soliciting for fund to bribe judges.

He said the complainant stated that Senator Sani had approached him and claimed that the CJN promised to help in relation with a case his (complainants) son in-law has with the police, but that he must provide N5million to bribe four judges and an EFCC operative.

The witness said, in the course of investigation, Alhaji Daudu brought $25,000 to his office, claiming that Senator Sani later returned the money to him on learning that he has reported the case to the EFCC.

The witness said investigators also analysed the mobile phones belonging to the complainant and the defendants, during which they confirmed the exchange of text messages between both men.

Aliyu said investigators also extracted the recorded conversations between both men from the complainant’s phone.

Lead prosecution’s lawyer, Ekele Iheanacho later tendered the cash, some compact disc (which the witness said contain audio recordings of the conversations between the complainant and the defendants), the two mobile phone, a letter from the Supreme Court, dated March 18, 2020, distancing the CJN from Senator Sani’s alleged claim, among others.

Before the cash was admitted, the judge, Justice Inyang Ekwo insisted that the witness ‎must count the money, kept in a brown envelope, to the haring of the court, which the witness did, revealing 250 pieces of $100 notes.
Justice Inyang Ekwo admitted the items in evidence and adjourned till December 4 this year for the discs to be played in open court.
