Officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday reportedly interrogated the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, Justice John Terhemba Tsoho, for several hours over a large sum of cash allegedly found in the possession of his wife.

According to sources cited by SaharaReporters, EFCC operatives questioned Justice Tsoho following the interception of his wife while she was travelling to Benue State. She was reportedly returned to Abuja after the interception.

Sources familiar with the matter alleged that $160,000 in cash was discovered in her possession at the time she was stopped by EFCC officials. However, the circumstances surrounding the funds and the purpose of the trip have not been officially clarified.

The development comes amid increasing scrutiny surrounding the Chief Judge.

Justice Tsoho is also scheduled to appear before the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) on March 16, 2026, over allegations that he failed to properly declare certain assets as required under Nigerian law.

A petition reportedly accused the Chief Judge of breaching the Code of Conduct rules by allegedly failing to disclose three bank accounts with United Bank for Africa (UBA) and another account with Access Bank in his asset declaration.

If the CCB establishes a prima facie case, it could initiate formal charges. A conviction could carry penalties including up to 10 years’ imprisonment and a 10-year ban from holding public office.

In response to the allegations, the Director of Information of the Federal High Court, Catherine Christopher, said in a statement that the Chief Judge remains fully committed to cooperating with the bureau.

The statement noted that Justice Tsoho intends to appear before the CCB alongside his legal representative, Kanu Godwin Agabi (SAN), who is currently outside the country for medical reasons but has indicated his willingness to accompany the Chief Judge upon his return.

According to the court, Justice Tsoho has already communicated his readiness to appear before the bureau and requested that his appearance be scheduled from the week beginning March 16 to allow both him and his counsel to attend.

The planned appearance follows an investigation by Premium Times, which alleged that the Chief Judge failed to disclose several bank accounts in an asset declaration submitted to the bureau on April 29, 2024.

Under Nigerian law, public officials are required to declare all assets, liabilities and bank accounts, including domiciliary accounts. Failure to make a full declaration can attract sanctions such as removal from office, disqualification from holding public office for up to 10 years, and forfeiture of improperly declared assets.

Justice Tsoho has, however, denied the allegations, insisting that he has complied with all legal requirements regarding asset declaration.
